10% Voters
ISLAMABAD: The latest analysis of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) data reveals a decline in the percentage of voters aged 65 and above, falling below 10% of the total registered voters. A comparison between the polling schemes of 2018 and 2023 indicates an increase of 1.67 million voters in the over-65 category, yet their proportion among the total voter population has decreased by nearly 1%.
In 2018, among the total registered voters of 105.95 million, 10.61 million (10.61%) were over 65. However, in 2023, with the voter count rising to 128.58 million, the over-65 demographic constitutes 12.29 million or 9.56% of the total.
A detailed breakdown across 144 districts highlights that only 26 districts have over 10% of voters in the elderly category. Among them, 14 districts are in Punjab, five each in Sindh and Balochistan, and two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Districts like Gujrat and Sargodha in Punjab exhibit the highest proportion with 11.77% of older voters, followed by other districts like Talagang, Chakwal, and Jhelum.
In Sindh, Karachi (South), Karachi (East), Karachi (Central), Karachi (Korangi), and Hyderabad are the five districts with over 10% of voters aged over 65. Conversely, Ghotki and Tando Allahyar have the lowest proportion of older voters.
Balochistan has five districts, including Kacchi, Duki, Loralai, Zhob, and Sibi, where over 10% of voters are aged 65 and above. Quetta, however, records the lowest ratio of older voters at 5.36%.
Among the 36 districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, only two surpass the 10% mark for older voters. Islamabad, with a total voter count of 1.08 million, sees 9.91% of voters aged 65 and above.
