Chilling weather predicted with rains and snowfall in pakistan with the start of new year

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting significant rainfall and snowfall in various regions of the country from January 1 to January 6, 2025.

A frontal weather system is expected to move into the western parts of Pakistan on the evening or night of January 1 and remain active in the upper regions until January 6.

Regions and Forecasts

  1. Western and Upper Areas
    • Rain, wind, and thunderstorms with heavy snowfall are forecasted from the night of January 1 to January 6.
    • Areas likely to be affected include Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, and Neelum Valley.
  2. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
    • Rain, wind, and thunderstorms are expected from January 1 to January 5, with heavy snowfall over hilly areas.
    • Affected districts include Chitral, Dir, Swat, and surrounding regions.
  3. Murree and Galliyat
    • Heavy snowfall and thunderstorms are forecasted from the night of January 1 to January 6.
  4. Punjab
    • Light rain is expected in Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and surrounding areas from January 2 to January 6.
  5. Balochistan
    • Rain and snowfall are anticipated in Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, and nearby regions from January 1 to January 4.
  6. Sindh
    • Cold and dry weather will prevail, though light rain may occur in Dadu, Sukkur, and Jacobabad on January 3 and 4.

  • Heavy Snowfall: From January 2 to January 6, heavy snowfall may result in road closures, slippery conditions, and potential landslides in areas like Murree, Galliyat, Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.
  • Tourist Caution: Travelers are advised to exercise caution and consider postponing plans to affected areas.
  • Benefits to Agriculture: Rainfall is expected to benefit crops in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
  • Cold Wave and Fog: A cold wave and dense fog are likely to follow the system.
