FAISALABAD: In response to the tragic incident involving the torching of churches in Jaranwala, Faisalabad district, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar expressed his deep sorrow. He stated that such incidents bring to light a prevailing societal ailment. During a visit to Jaranwala, where violent mobs had set fire to 19 churches over blasphemy allegations on August 16, the Prime Minister addressed the Christian community and emphasized the importance of unity among different faiths.
He assured that if any individual engages in injustices against the lives or property of minorities, the state will stand in solidarity with the minority brethren. The Prime Minister stressed that the Christian community is an integral part of the country and emphasized the shared responsibility of safeguarding the rights of minorities. He quoted verses from the Holy Quran that demonstrate the respect accorded to figures such as Hazrat Isa (AS) and Bibi Maryam.
Kakar questioned the reasons for discord between two faiths that share similar beliefs. He reaffirmed that extremism has no affiliation with any religion, sect, or region. He further noted that the protection of minority rights is the responsibility of all citizens.
In the incident, a violent mob vandalized more than 80 Christian homes and 19 churches in Jaranwala. The mob’s actions were widely condemned by political and religious leaders, civil society, and the army chief. Investigations are ongoing, including the involvement of a cleric who allegedly used mosque loudspeakers to incite protests against alleged blasphemy by Christians.
The Prime Minister’s visit aimed to express empathy and solidarity with the affected Christian community, promoting harmony and understanding among different religious groups in the country.
