ISLAMABAD: The attorney general for Pakistan presented the list of 102 people under military custody to the Supreme Court during the hearing of multiple petitions against the trial of civilians in military courts.
A six-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and comprising other justices, conducted the hearing.
The attorney general informed the court that the 102 individuals were involved in attacks on military installations, including the GHQ, army institute, Lahore Corps Commander House, Multan garrison, and Gujranwala garrison, among others.
Moreover, he stated that the suspects were identified through CCTV cameras and other evidence.
Additionally, During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer expresses. That his client did not want the chief justice to be associated with his name. In response, the Chief Justice assured respect for the petitioner’s wishes.
Petitioner former chief justice Jawad S Khawaja’s counsel conveyed that his client wants to be treated as a common citizen. The Chief Justice clarified that Khawaja’s constitutional petition is non-political.
The reasons for sending the suspects to military courts were questioned by the court, and the attorney general assured that no person will be sentenced to death or life imprisonment without the court’s knowledge.
However, the court also discussed the possibility of forming a full court to address the matter. The attorney general ensures that a trial would not begin without the court’s knowledge.
In addition, The court decided to first hear the petitions regarding the constitution of a full court on the matter. Considering some judges had excused themselves from hearing the case.
