ISLAMABAD: The appointments of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Deputy Chairman Ihtesham Qadir and Prosecutor General Sohail Nasir have been challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which has issued notices to the relevant authorities.
According to 24 News HD, the court issued notices to NAB, the Ministry of Law and Justice, the deputy chairman and the prosecutor general on Wednesday. Justice Umair Majeed Malik heard the petition filed by lawyer Dr GM Chaudhry.
The petitioner argued that the appointments were not made through a transparent process and alleged that authorities had failed to advertise the positions before filling them.
He further maintained that the appointments violated Sections 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance. On this basis, he requested the court to declare both appointments illegal and motivated by mala fide intentions.
The petitioner also filed separate applications seeking interim relief. One application requested the court to direct both officials to stop performing their duties while the case remains pending.
Another application sought an order requiring the concerned authorities to produce the official records relating to the appointments.
The Islamabad High Court issued notices on these applications as well, seeking responses from the relevant parties.
However, the court has not issued a final ruling on the legality of the appointments. It subsequently adjourned the hearing.
The case places the appointment procedures for senior officials of Pakistan’s anti-corruption watchdog under judicial scrutiny. Further proceedings will determine how the respondents address the allegations and whether the court grants the relief sought by the petitioner.
