Veteran Bollywood actor Mushtaq Khan has died at 56, prompting an outpouring of grief across the Indian film industry. His familiar supporting roles had earned him recognition among Hindi cinema audiences over the years.
Following his death, Pakistani actor Yasir Hussain paid tribute by recalling one of Khan’s most memorable dialogues. The tribute brought back his iconic character from the popular comedy film Welcome.
Yasir shared an Instagram Story featuring the late actor and wrote, “RIP Mushtaq Khan. Meri aik tang nakli hai, mai hockey ka player hun.” The dialogue refers to Khan’s memorable role in Welcome and remains associated with one of the film’s comic moments.
Mushtaq Khan Dies After Cancer Relapse
Mushtaq Khan died in Mumbai on Thursday, September 24. Industry representatives and his business partner confirmed his death.
The actor had been receiving treatment after his health deteriorated following a cancer relapse. He had reportedly spent around 15 days at Nanavati Hospital before his death.
According to his business partner, Khan was first diagnosed with cancer around five years ago. He later recovered, but the disease eventually returned.
However, reports have differed regarding the specific type of cancer he was suffering from.
Mushtaq Khan’s Memorable Role in Welcome
Khan remained closely associated with his role as Ballu in the 2007 comedy Welcome. His character became particularly memorable because of the dialogue about having an artificial leg and being a hockey player.
The same dialogue later featured in Yasir Hussain’s tribute following Khan’s death. By recalling the line, Yasir highlighted one of the performances that helped make Khan a recognisable face among Hindi film audiences.
Mushtaq Khan’s Bollywood Career
Mushtaq Khan began his acting career with Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai in 1980. Over the following decades, he appeared in numerous popular Hindi films.
His film credits included Aashiqui, Hera Pheri, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Welcome, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Gadar 2 and Stree 2.
Beyond films, Khan also worked extensively in television. His television appearances included shows such as Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi and Adaalat.
His connection with the Gadar franchise continued when he returned as Gul Khan in Gadar 2. The appearance came nearly two decades after the original film.
