MURREE: A special meeting in Murree, chaired by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, reviewed progress on the Murree Development Plan, 24NewsHD reported Thursday.
Mariyum Aurangzeb, chairperson of the steering committee for the Murree Development Programme, briefed the meeting on ongoing and completed projects, including five major water supply schemes.
According to the briefing, four major water supply projects have been completed under the chief minister’s directives, adding 700,000 gallons of water to Murree’s daily supply.
The Donga Gali project increased daily water availability from 50,000 to 350,000 gallons. Projects in Dhar Jawa, Masot and Khani Ghat have also been completed.
Meanwhile, the mega Bulk Water Supply Project will bring water from the Jhelum River to Murree by December 2028. The project includes seven pumping stations and a 29.6-kilometre pipeline. It is expected to benefit more than 425,000 residents of Murree and Kotli Sattian. A water treatment plant will also form part of the scheme.
The meeting was told that around 96,000 households in Murree continue to receive water through tankers.
Officials also set October 31 as the deadline for completing construction and expansion work on the Rawalpindi-Murree-Kashmir Road. The project includes repairs, road shoulders, Tuff-tile footpaths, streetlights and road furniture. Special measures will also address landslide risks.
The development plan includes Murree’s first Hill View Park and a 600-seat amphitheatre on Mall Road following encroachment removal. The site will feature walkways, a family park, kiosks, gazebos and a children’s play area.
At Bansra Gali Wildlife Park, authorities plan Punjab’s first elevated tourist bridge, alongside an amphitheatre, souvenir shop, food court and eco-lodge.
The meeting also approved plans to preserve historic buildings, regulate Mall Road businesses and replace overhead electricity lines with underground wiring in key areas.
