Police have registered a case against an orphanage administrator in Multan following the death of 15-year-old Waseem Abbas, who was allegedly chased and run over by a man in a car. The case follows concerns about how the teenager was sent from an NGO-run orphanage to work without proper authorisation.
Administrator Booked Under Child Labour Law
According to police, the case against the orphanage administrator was registered on a complaint filed by an assistant director of the Labour Department.
The complaint named Shoaib, a member of the NGO’s governing body. Investigators are examining the circumstances in which the orphanage transferred Waseem for employment.
Police said Waseem had been living at the orphanage before the administration sent him to work with Tauqeer Nazir to learn electrical skills. He had reportedly worked with the man for around a week.
A separate case was also registered against Tauqeer under the Child Labour Act over allegations that he employed an underage child.
Teenager Allegedly Chased and Run Over
Waseem reportedly tried to leave the workplace because of alleged mistreatment. Police said Tauqeer chased him in a car and allegedly ran him over at the Royal Orchard housing society in Multan. The incident sparked public concern over the safety of children sent to workplaces for vocational training.
Suspect Dies in Alleged Police Encounter
Tauqeer was arrested in connection with Waseem’s death and placed on a four-day physical remand. However, police later reported that he died during an alleged encounter with Punjab’s Crime Control Department near Bahawalpur.
Officials said a police team attempted to stop two men travelling on a motorcycle. An exchange of fire followed, killing Tauqeer, while the other man escaped.
The cases have raised questions about orphanage oversight, child labour protections and safeguards for vulnerable children. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Waseem’s death and his placement at the workplace remain central to the matter.
