India’s National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl. The alleged incident occurred on a moving bus after the teenager boarded it in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the NHRC, the incident took place on August 4, 2026. The Commission said the reported incident raises serious concerns about possible human rights violations.
It has now issued notices to senior police officials in three jurisdictions. The notices went to the police commissioners of Delhi and Gautam Budh Nagar. The Mainpuri superintendent of police also received a notice from the rights watchdog.
The NHRC has asked the authorities to submit detailed reports within two weeks.
“The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of human rights violations. Therefore, it has issued notices to the police commissioners of Delhi and Gautam Budh Nagar and Mainpuri superintendent of police, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks,” the NHRC said.
NHRC seeks investigation and compensation details
The Commission wants authorities to provide details about the investigation into the alleged assault. It has also asked officials to disclose whether any compensation has been paid to the victim.
The NHRC’s intervention follows reports detailing how the teenager ended up on the private bus.
According to those reports, the girl had left home without informing anyone. She was travelling towards Noida Sector 63, where her cousin lives. However, she mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida at around 9pm.
Heavy rain was reportedly falling at the time. The girl then realised that she remained around 25 kilometres from her destination. She began searching for another means of transport to continue her journey.
Girl allegedly boards private sleeper bus
A private sleeper bus stopped near Pari Chowk during her search for transport. The conductor reportedly told her that the bus was heading towards Sector 63.
He also told her that they could drop her there. Trusting the information, the teenager boarded the bus. However, police said the vehicle was not operating as a regular passenger service that day.
According to police, the bus had been taken to a workshop in Surajpur, Greater Noida. The vehicle reportedly required repairs after developing a technical problem.
Two men accused of sexually assaulting teenager
Police identified the two accused as bus driver Kuldeep, 39, and conductor Sandeep, 26. The two men allegedly sexually assaulted the teenager after she boarded the bus. The alleged assault took place while the bus was moving.
Later, the accused reportedly abandoned the girl at Kashmere Gate. The teenager then boarded an auto-rickshaw and travelled to a police station. She subsequently approached police after reaching Kashmere Gate.
Rights watchdog seeks answers from authorities
The NHRC’s intervention has now placed the investigation under additional scrutiny.
The Commission has asked police authorities to provide a detailed account of the case. The requested report will include the investigation’s current status.
It will also cover any compensation provided to the victim. Meanwhile, the alleged circumstances surrounding the teenager’s journey have raised serious concerns.
The case involves multiple jurisdictions, including Greater Noida, Delhi and Mainpuri. Therefore, the NHRC has sought information from police authorities across the relevant areas.
The Commission’s notice marks a formal step toward examining the reported human rights concerns.
Authorities now have two weeks to submit the requested reports to the NHRC.
