A private hospital in Karachi has been sealed after a 20-day-old infant tested positive for mpox, raising serious concerns about medical safety and hygiene.
The Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) took action against Ibn-e-Hassan Hospital in Malir 15 after receiving a report from the District Health Officer (DHO), Korangi.
Infant Reportedly Infected During Circumcision
According to health officials, the infant reportedly contracted the virus after staff performed circumcision using scissors suspected of being contaminated.
Laboratory tests at Dow University confirmed the infection in the baby’s samples. Authorities then investigated the facility to determine the circumstances surrounding the case.
The incident has raised concerns about sterilisation procedures and infection-control practices at healthcare facilities.
SHCC Reports Illegal Medical Operations
The commission said the hospital was operating illegally and that unqualified staff were performing circumcisions on children.
Officials also identified poor sanitation and inadequate infection prevention and control measures at the facility. They said these conditions posed risks to patients and public health.
The SHCC carried out the enforcement operation with support from the DHO Korangi and local police.
Police Assist During Sealing Operation
According to the commission, individuals at the hospital resisted the inspection, prompting officials to seek police assistance. Authorities subsequently brought the situation under control and sealed the facility.
The incident highlights the importance of choosing qualified healthcare professionals and registered medical facilities, particularly for procedures involving newborns.
Medical procedures require properly sterilised instruments, trained staff and appropriate hygiene standards to reduce the risk of infections.
Authorities have not publicly detailed the infant’s current condition or recovery in the available reports. The case has renewed attention on patient safety and the need for effective oversight of healthcare establishments.
