ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has indicated that momentum is building for the resumption of negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, with discussions potentially beginning as early as Wednesday.
A senior Pakistani official involved in the process said preparations are underway for a possible agreement, which may include direct or virtual participation by US President Donald Trump. โThe talks are moving forward and are on track for tomorrow,โ the source said on condition of anonymity.
The development comes as uncertainty continues to surround the diplomatic process, with the existing ceasefire nearing its expiration and key differences still unresolved. Nevertheless, both sides have shown cautious willingness to re-engage in dialogue.
President Trump is reportedly seeking an agreement to prevent further increases in global oil prices and avoid disruptions in financial markets. At the same time, he has reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons capability.
Meanwhile, Tehran aims to safeguard its nuclear programme while leveraging its strategic position over the Strait of Hormuz to secure sanctions relief and prevent renewed conflict. An Iranian official told Reuters that the government is โpositively reviewingโ participation in the talks, although internal consultations are still ongoing.
If the negotiations proceed, they will serve as a critical diplomatic test ahead of the ceasefire deadline. While both sides appear open to engagement, significant gaps remain, underscoring the challenges in reaching a comprehensive agreement.
