Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has clarified the purpose of his recent Iran visit while launching a sharp criticism of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Speaking in the Senate, Naqvi said his trip focused on easing the regional crisis, not negotiating a defence agreement.
He also declared that he no longer respected Fazlur Rehman following the politician’s reported remark that he “spits on the state”. Naqvi said the statement had changed his view of the JUI-F chief, whom he had previously respected.
Naqvi Rejects Claims of Iran Defence Deal
Addressing the Senate on Wednesday, Naqvi dismissed suggestions that his visit to Iran aimed to secure a defence agreement. Instead, he maintained that the trip sought to help manage the ongoing regional crisis.
His clarification came amid political discussion surrounding the visit and its objectives. However, Naqvi emphasised that crisis management, rather than defence negotiations, had motivated his engagement.
Interior Minister Criticises Fazlur Rehman
Naqvi said Fazlur Rehman had criticised him for several weeks before the latest controversy intensified their differences. According to the interior minister, the JUI-F chief’s reported remarks left little room for the respect he previously held.
Furthermore, Naqvi accused Fazlur Rehman of using Islam for political and personal gains. He also alleged that JUI-F representatives had earlier advocated imposing governor’s rule.
The interior minister said he was prepared to substantiate his allegations. He added that people who criticised the state should also expect a response to their statements.
Government Benefits Remarks Trigger Political Tensions
During his Senate address, Naqvi also warned that individuals who previously benefited from the state before turning against it would no longer receive government jobs or financial benefits.
His remarks added another layer to the political confrontation, as tensions rose during the proceedings.
JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza protested while Naqvi spoke, repeatedly urging the interior minister to listen to him. The exchange highlighted the growing friction inside the House.
The Senate session thus became a platform for competing political positions, with Naqvi defending his Iran visit and confronting Fazlur Rehman’s criticism. Meanwhile, the dispute over the reported remarks and government benefits added to the intensity of the debate.
