Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a high-powered task force to reform the country’s examination system. Meanwhile, authorities cleared a major protest site after weeks of demonstrations led by students and youth activists.
Modi Unveils Task Force For Exam Reforms
Modi announced the decision in a video message posted on X. He said the government had formed a special panel to improve the credibility and transparency of examinations.
The task force will be led by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. Additionally, it will focus on strengthening examination reforms through greater use of technology.
“Our examination system must be reliable,” Modi said in the video statement. He added that the system must remain transparent and make maximum use of technology.
Furthermore, Modi pledged to restore confidence in upcoming examinations as quickly as possible. The announcement followed the resignation of India’s education minister a day earlier.
Weeks of protests over alleged examination irregularities culminated in the minister’s resignation on Saturday. Moreover, the government accepted several key demands raised by demonstrators.
The protests, organised by the social media-driven Cockroach Janta Party, drew thousands of participants to New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
Authorities Clear Protest Site After Demonstrations
The movement gradually expanded beyond education issues to include unemployment and opportunities for young people. Critics also used the protests to challenge the government’s style of governance.
On Sunday, municipal workers cleaned roads and pavements around the Jantar Mantar protest site. They also painted over anti-government graffiti that protesters had left on surrounding walls.
One municipal worker said cleaning began shortly after demonstrators vacated the area. However, he noted that some protest slogans remained faintly visible despite the repainting work.
