Hundreds of drones targeted Moscow and surrounding areas on Sunday, killing at least two people and damaging key infrastructure. Russian authorities said the attacks occurred on the final day of the country’s parliamentary elections.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defence systems intercepted and destroyed more than 1,600 drones. According to him, around 450 of those drones were aimed at the Russian capital.
Russia and Ukraine Exchange Claims
Sobyanin accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the three-day parliamentary election. He said the large-scale attack failed to affect the voting process and described it as an unprecedented operation.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the strikes. He said long-range operations had a significant impact in the Moscow region and claimed important oil and logistics facilities were hit.
According to Zelensky, the targeted sites play a major role in supporting Russia’s military operations. He said the damage could affect resources used in the ongoing conflict.
Drone Strikes Cause Casualties and Damage
Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said two people were killed in separate incidents. The victims included a 44-year-old woman and an elderly man.
A drone crash also sparked a fire in a 21-storey residential building. Authorities evacuated around 400 residents from the building as emergency crews responded to the blaze.
Separately, officials in the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine’s Kherson region reported another drone attack. Authorities said a drone struck a bus, killing two people, including a member of the electoral commission.
The latest attacks mark one of the largest drone barrages reported around Moscow. The developments come as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate.
