A man died after setting himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday. Authorities have launched an investigation into the tragic incident.
According to police, emergency services received a report at approximately 6:32 p.m. local time. The incident occurred near First Avenue and 42nd Street, close to the UN headquarters.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported the man to Bellevue Hospital. However, doctors later pronounced him dead.
Police have not yet disclosed the motive behind the incident. Furthermore, investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
UN Expresses Condolences
Following the incident, the United Nations expressed sorrow over the tragedy.
A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres said, “We are saddened by this tragic and horrific incident, and offer our condolences to his family.”
Authorities have not provided additional details regarding the investigation.
Activists Identify the Victim
Although investigators have not officially confirmed the man’s identity, activists and several media reports identified him as pro-Tibet campaigner Lobga Rangzen.
Tencho Gyatso, President of the International Campaign for Tibet, also identified the deceased.
In a statement, Gyatso said, “Lobga was a tireless advocate for Tibet who devoted himself to peacefully raising awareness of the human rights crisis in Tibet.”
According to Gyatso, Rangzen had publicly opposed China’s “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress.”
Chinese authorities say the law aims to build a “shared” national identity among the country’s ethnic groups.
However, overseas rights campaigners argue the legislation could further weaken the rights of ethnic minorities, including Tibetans and Uyghurs.
Background to the Tibet Issue
China sent troops into Tibet in 1950 and considers the region an integral part of the country.
Meanwhile, the 90-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has lived in India since 1959. He fled Lhasa after an uprising was suppressed by Chinese forces.
The Dalai Lama has consistently promoted the “Middle Way” approach. The policy seeks greater autonomy for Tibet through “resolution to the Sino-Tibet conflict through non-violence, dialog and mutual benefit”.
Investigation Continues
Officials have not announced any conclusions regarding the motive behind the incident. Therefore, investigations remain ongoing.
Meanwhile, authorities are expected to release further information once the inquiry progresses.
The incident has drawn international attention because of its location outside the UN headquarters. However, officials have urged the public to wait for confirmed findings before drawing conclusions.
