Three Democratic candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have secured victories in congressional elections, strengthening the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and potentially reshaping its approach towards Israel.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez won their respective House races on Tuesday after defeating their Republican opponents in heavily Democratic districts.
All three candidates had previously secured Democratic nominations in June following competitive primary campaigns supported by Mamdani.
Avila Chevalier and Valdez are members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), an organisation known for its progressive political agenda and criticism of Israeli policies. Lander, meanwhile, describes himself as a liberal Zionist but has repeatedly accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
Their victories could increase pressure within Congress to reconsider American military assistance to Israel and strengthen calls for restrictions on arms transfers.
Meanwhile, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul secured another term after defeating Republican candidate Bruce Blakeman by a substantial margin.
Other moderate Democrats, including Hakeem Jeffries, Ritchie Torres and Grace Meng, also won their congressional races.
The election results highlight growing divisions within the Democratic Party over US foreign policy, Israel and domestic economic priorities.
Mamdani’s growing political influence has also drawn attention as progressive candidates gain representation in Congress.
