Malaysia condemns the Israeli flag raising inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, describing the incident as a serious provocation and a violation of the sanctity of one of Islamโs holiest sites. The condemnation follows a recent visit by Israeli settlers to the mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem under police protection.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said any attempt to alter the identity of Al-Aqsa Mosque or impose changes on its historical and religious status was unacceptable. The ministry emphasised that efforts to Judaise the holy site constitute a desecration of a place of worship revered by Muslims worldwide.
Malaysia Denounces Actions at Al-Aqsa Mosque
According to the ministry, Israeli settlers entered the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque on Sunday and raised Israeli flags while performing what it described as provocative activities. Malaysia argued that these actions sought to change the existing reality on the ground and alter the site’s cultural, historical, and religious character.
Furthermore, the ministry stated that such incidents disregard the custodial role over Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem and risk escalating tensions in the region. It urged the international community not to remain silent in the face of ongoing developments affecting the holy site.
Call for UN Intervention and Support for Palestine
Malaysia also called on the United Nations and the broader international community to take immediate and concrete measures to prevent further violations and ensure accountability. In addition, the government reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination.
The ministry reiterated its backing for an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Meanwhile, Palestinians continue to express concerns over efforts to alter the identity of occupied East Jerusalem and its religious landmarks.
