ISLAMABAD: The National Highways & Motorway Police (NH&MP) announced Monday that the M-1 Motorway between Islamabad and Peshawar has reopened for all types of traffic in both directions.
The motorway had remained closed since last week amid heightened security measures linked to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) planned march towards Islamabad. The protest was initially scheduled for September 27 but was later postponed until October 4.
A Motorway Police spokesperson said restoration work was still continuing on the M-14 Motorway between Hakla and Kundal. Work was also underway on the connecting loop between the M-1 and Hazara Motorway.
Meanwhile, motorists travelling from Islamabad towards Abbottabad can leave the M-1 at Burhan Interchange and continue through Hasan Abdal using the GT Road. They can then rejoin the Hazara Expressway at Jhuri Kas Interchange.
The N-5, commonly known as the GT Road, between Islamabad and Peshawar has also been reopened to traffic.
Earlier, authorities had closed the M-1 between Islamabad Toll Plaza and Chhachh Interchange, while the M-14 was blocked between Hakla and Kundal. The GT Road was also closed at Attock Khurd.
Security was strengthened in Attock, with containers and sandbags placed near key bridges and additional personnel deployed at major entry and exit points.
PTI later announced that its march would begin from Peshawar on October 4. The party has been demanding the release of its founder, Imran Khan, who remains incarcerated at Adiala Jail. Authorities have also imposed Section 144 restrictions in Punjab and Islamabad and approved Rangers deployment in Islamabad and several Punjab districts amid preparations for the planned protest.
