Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices have surged by around 80% across Pakistan, creating additional financial difficulties for households and businesses. The sharp increase comes as winter approaches and consumers face growing shortages of cooking gas across the country.
LPG, which serves as an essential alternative to natural gas, has become increasingly expensive in recent weeks. Consequently, families without reliable access to piped gas must pay significantly higher prices to meet their daily cooking needs.
LPG Prices Exceed Official Rates Amid Shortages
The open-market price of LPG has reached approximately Rs 600 to Rs 700 per kilogram in several areas. Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has fixed the official November rate at Rs 294.08 per kilogram.
As a result, consumers are paying more than double the notified price in some markets. An 11.8-kilogram domestic cylinder can now cost between Rs 6,000 and Rs 8,260, depending on local market conditions.
The supply shortage has worsened following disruptions in LPG imports through the Iranian border. Additionally, rising international prices and increased winter demand have placed further pressure on domestic supplies.

Government Plans Measures to Control LPG Prices
Meanwhile, the government has introduced a new distribution mechanism to improve LPG availability and address unfair pricing. Under the proposed arrangement, local producers will allocate 10% of their production to state-owned marketing companies, while the remaining 90% will enter transparent auctions.
The government expects this approach to improve market competition and ensure fair distribution. Furthermore, authorities aim to strengthen monitoring and prevent retailers from exploiting supply shortages.
The rising LPG costs have also affected transport operators, restaurants and small businesses that depend on the fuel. Therefore, consumers have urged authorities to restore affordable supplies and enforce effective measures against excessive pricing.
