LAHORE: Chief Justice of Lahore High Court imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on a female petitioner who filed a contempt petition against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and others.
The LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum fined Ashba Kamran Rs 100,000 for filing an unnecessary contempt petition and providing incorrect case details.
The chief justice expressed displeasure during Wednesday’s hearing and said the petitioner had wasted the court’s valuable time.
The court imposed the fine while hearing Ashba Kamran’s petition against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and other officials.
Additional Advocate General Muhammad Naveed Sheikh and Assistant Advocate General Waqas Umar appeared for the Punjab government.
Petitioner questioned implementation of court orders
During the hearing, Ashba Kamran asked whether the Constitution and Supreme Court orders were binding on every citizen.
She also questioned whether Supreme Court directives applied only to ordinary citizens or extended to everyone.
The petitioner claimed authorities had failed to implement paragraphs nine to 11 of a Supreme Court order.
She further cited former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s removal and alleged that authorities had acted against him for disobeying a court order.
However, Chief Justice Aalia Neelum reminded her that she had approached the court through a contempt petition.
The chief justice then asked Kamran to provide the number of the petition supporting her contempt application.
Kamran could not satisfy the court regarding the incorrect petition number mentioned in her application.
Consequently, the chief justice imposed a Rs100,000 fine for the error and wasting judicial time.
The court directed that the matter would proceed only after the petitioner paid the imposed fine.
Kamran has filed the petition against the Punjab chief minister, chief secretary and speaker of the Punjab Assembly.
