LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has acquitted a man and his son convicted in the murder case of Assistant Commissioner Jhang Imran Jafar.
A division bench comprising Justice Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry and Justice Sardar Akbar Ali Dogar announced the verdict on Friday.
The court set aside the Sessions Court’s convictions against Asghar Ali and his son Sohail Asghar.
The Sessions Court in Chiniot had sentenced Sohail to death and his father to life imprisonment for Jafar’s murder.
Court Finds Evidence Inconsistent
According to the case record, the accused allegedly shot Imran Jafar on December 5, 2021.
At the time, Jafar served as Assistant Commissioner Jhang and had returned home while on leave.
The prosecution said the accused were close relatives of the deceased and had a dispute over water drainage.
However, the High Court found no evidence confirming that the eyewitnesses were present at the crime scene.
Moreover, the bench identified contradictions between witness statements and the medical report. These inconsistencies raised doubts about the prosecution’s case against the accused.
Therefore, the court acquitted Asghar Ali and Sohail Asghar after setting aside the trial court’s verdict. The case had remained pending for five years before the High Court delivered its decision.
