Will ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi Lead Pakistan’s Women’s Cricket After Tania Malik’s Resignation?

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi for a prominent position in the management of Pakistan’s women’s cricket team, following Tania Malik’s recent departure. Shehrbano, currently serving in the Police Services of Pakistan, is regarded as a top contender for this role, with her strong public service record catching the board’s attention.

Shehrbano gained public recognition earlier this year for her swift intervention in an incident at Lahore’s Ichhra Bazaar, where she protected a woman from an attack, showcasing her dedication and bravery. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who served as the interim Chief Minister of Punjab during that time, is said to be considering her appointment, impressed by her proactive community service.

The women’s cricket leadership role became vacant after Tania Malik resigned in October 2021. Since assuming the position in 2021, Tania worked to expand women’s cricket in Pakistan, advancing grassroots development and broadening the talent pool. Her contributions also earned her a place on the ICC Women’s Committee as a Full Member representative, a rare honor reflecting her commitment.

In a related development, the PCB recently announced the resignation of PSL Director Sohaib Sheikh alongside Tania. Sohaib, who returned to the PCB last year after previously serving from 2016 to 2019, played a pivotal role in the successful launch and ongoing success of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). PCB Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer lauded both Sohaib and Tania’s contributions, acknowledging their dedication to the organization’s growth and wishing them success in their future careers.

The PCB is actively seeking candidates to fill the vacant leadership roles, with Shehrbano Naqvi emerging as a strong candidate for the head of women’s cricket, reflecting the board’s intention to bring a fresh perspective to women’s cricket in Pakistan.
