NDMA Alerts Pakistan for Severe Monsoon Rainfall

Monsoon Rainfall

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast indicating heavy rainfall across most regions of the country over the next three days. In response to this, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has declared a high alert.

The PMD’s forecast predicts substantial rainfall across various areas, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, from August 21 to 24. This intense downpour is expected to lead to increased water levels in local rivers, streams, and notably in the Kabul River.

NDMA has highlighted the potential for flooding in several districts within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Abbottabad, Parachinar, Charsadda, Chitral, Dir, Haripur, and Hazara, among others. Flooding concerns are also prevalent in Malakand, Mansehra, Mardan, Peshawar, and Swabi.

To mitigate the risks, the NDMA has instructed all relevant agencies to stay on high alert and be prepared for immediate response to any emergent situations. Travelers and tourists have been advised to avoid mountainous regions due to the increased risk of landslides.

In Punjab, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) anticipates significant rainfall in most districts within the next 24 hours.

PDMA Director-General Irfan Ali Kathia has reported a low-level flood situation in the River Indus, with water levels in the Rivers Chenab, Ravi, Jhelum, and Sutlej remaining normal.

The administration remains vigilant due to the flood threat in hill torrents. Recent reports indicate a moderate flood surge that passed through Potohar and Sohri in the northern regions, while an above-normal flood surge was observed in the Zangi area. The flood situation in Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan hill torrents remains stable.

Kathia further noted that Mangla Dam’s water level stands at 71%, while Tarbela Dam is at full capacity. Indian dams are reporting lower levels, with Bhakra Dam at 54%, Pong Dam at 53%, and Thein Dam at 26% capacity.

In Lahore, the weather will feature a mix of sunshine and clouds throughout the day. The temperatures in the provincial capital are expected to range from a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 34 degrees Celsius, with the current temperature at 30 degrees Celsius.

Wind speeds in Lahore are recorded at 5 kilometers per hour, and the humidity level is at 74%, contributing to sultry conditions. The likelihood of rainfall in Lahore today remains low.

In Balochistan, the Meteorological Department forecasts hot and humid conditions across most districts. Areas such as Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel, Sherani, Loralai, Sibi, Ziarat, Lasbela, Qalat, Khuzdar, and Naseerabad are expected to experience strong winds, thunderstorms, and some rainfall.

Temperature readings across Balochistan include Quetta at 36 degrees Celsius, Qalat at 30 degrees Celsius, Zhob at 30 degrees Celsius, Ziarat at 25 degrees Celsius, Sibi at 40 degrees Celsius, Turbat at 28 degrees Celsius, Nokkundi at 45 degrees Celsius, Chaman at 33 degrees Celsius, Gwadar at 35 degrees Celsius, and Jiwani at 33 degrees Celsius.
