US Urges Pakistan to lift social media restrictions

In a notable development on Tuesday, the U.S. State Department reiterated its call for the Pakistani government to promptly end internet shutdowns and remove restrictions on social media platforms. During a press briefing, Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the department, expressed unequivocal condemnation for the government-imposed shutdowns of internet platforms. Miller underscored the vital importance of upholding fundamental freedoms, emphasizing that the United States would continue to stress this point in its engagements with Pakistani officials.

The spokesperson reiterated Washington’s unwavering commitment to fostering freedom of expression in Pakistan and condemned any actions that impede access to online platforms. The call comes amid a global context where internet freedom is increasingly recognized as a critical aspect of democratic governance, making the U.S. stance align with broader principles of open communication and information exchange.

Addressing concerns about irregularities in recent Pakistani polls, Miller urged the newly elected government to undertake a comprehensive investigation into alleged electoral misconduct. While acknowledging the competitive nature of the elections and the significant voter turnout, he highlighted reported irregularities and challenges raised by political parties regarding the credibility of the election results. Miller stressed the necessity of transparently addressing these concerns, reflecting the U.S. commitment to supporting fair and democratic electoral processes globally.

These statements follow recent diplomatic moves by Washington, including congratulating Maryam Nawaz on her historic election as Punjab’s first woman chief minister. Additionally, the reaffirmation of commitment to strengthen the partnership with Pakistan under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signals a desire for continued collaboration and engagement between the two nations. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, these diplomatic interactions shed light on the importance of democratic values, human rights, and transparent governance in shaping international relations.
