Supreme Court Judges Convene Urgent Consultation on Rawalpindi Commissioner’s Allegations

ISLAMABAD: According to reliable sources, a pivotal consultation meeting is underway in the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s chamber, responding to the allegations of pressure and electoral rigging leveled by Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha.

The meeting is convened to address the serious allegations put forth by Commissioner Chattha, with prominent judges, including Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Ayesha Malik, and Justice Athar Minallah, actively participating in the deliberations. The central focus of the meeting revolves around a meticulous review of the allegations brought forward by the Rawalpindi commissioner.

The allegations, which have sparked widespread attention, are being carefully scrutinized by the judges. After thorough deliberation, a decision will be made regarding whether to take formal notice of the allegations or not, as per the sources.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has called for the Election Commission to conduct a transparent investigation into the allegations. In a statement, the SCBA emphasized that Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha’s actions aimed to cast doubt on the office of the Chief Justice, stressing that the Chief Justice has no role in the electoral process.

Rawalpindi

In a dramatic turn of events on Saturday, Rawalpindi Commissioner Chattha resigned from his post amidst revelations of electoral misconduct. In a series of emotional statements, Chattha expressed remorse, shame, and a desire for atonement.

He publicly acknowledged feeling ashamed of his responsibilities while on election duty and asserted that he should face severe consequences for his alleged misconduct. A video circulating shows Chattha stating that presiding officers were in tears before him, leading him to surrender to the police. Additionally, he claimed to have attempted suicide after Fajr’s prayers, citing a desire to prevent a repetition of the incident of 1971.

His statements and actions have raised significant concerns, prompting a comprehensive review by the judges in the ongoing consultation meeting. The outcome of this meeting is anticipated to play a crucial role in determining the course of action in response to the allegations.
