Sugar Prices
The price of sugar in Lahore continues to rise sharply, reaching an all-time high of Rs180 per kg, leaving citizens frustrated as they struggle to manage household expenses amid escalating costs.
The latest surge in sugar prices has added to the financial burden of consumers, especially with Ramadan approaching, when demand for essential commodities traditionally increases.
Over the past ten days, sugar prices have jumped by Rs15 per kg, causing distress among families already dealing with inflation. Many citizens fear that even basic sweetened items may become unaffordable during the holy month.
Expressing concern over the situation, a local resident remarked, “At this rate, we might have to drink unsweetened sherbet during Ramadan.”
The wholesale market has also seen a significant hike in sugar prices. A 50kg sugar sack, which was previously selling at Rs7,400, has now risen by Rs1,000, reaching Rs8,400.
Retailers and shopkeepers anticipate further price hikes in the coming weeks, warning that if the trend persists, sugar could become even more expensive, making it difficult for the average consumer to purchase.
Sugar traders attribute the ongoing price hike to increased exports, which they believe have disrupted the local supply chain. They argue that while exports benefit sugar mills, they negatively impact local consumers by creating artificial shortages and inflating prices.
Traders have urged the government to step in and regulate supply and demand instead of prioritizing the interests of sugar mills.
With sugar prices soaring and no immediate relief in sight, citizens are calling for swift government intervention to stabilize the market and ensure that essential commodities remain accessible, especially during Ramadan, when consumption patterns shift significantly.
