Sindh Government Restores Deputy Commissioners’ Authority to Issue Firearm Licenses

KARACHI: In a notable policy shift, the Sindh government has reinstated the authority of deputy commissioners to issue firearm licenses, effective August 1, 2024. This decision, confirmed by a notification issued on Friday, overturns a previous ban imposed by the caretaker government last year.

The notification, endorsed by the Minister for Home, Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and Criminal Prosecution of Sindh, announces: “With the approval of the Minister for Home, Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and Criminal Prosecution, Sindh, the ban on issuance of arms licenses at deputy commissioner offices in the province is hereby lifted with effect from August 01, 2024.” This move reaffirms the provincial government’s commitment to addressing both security concerns and public demand for a more efficient licensing process.

Under the previous regime, firearm license issuance was centralized, leading to delays and administrative hurdles for residents seeking legal access to firearms. By transferring this responsibility back to deputy commissioners, the Sindh government aims to simplify and expedite the process. Deputy commissioners will now handle applications and approvals directly, making it easier for residents to obtain licenses and thereby enhance public safety.

The decision to restore this authority is seen as a proactive measure to address growing security concerns across the province. By empowering local officials, the Sindh government hopes to ensure that the process of acquiring a firearm license is more accessible and streamlined, responding to public needs for improved security measures.

As the August 1 deadline approaches, residents will be able to apply for firearm licenses through their local deputy commissioners, marking a significant shift in how firearm regulations are managed in Sindh. This change is anticipated to improve both efficiency and accessibility in the licensing process, benefiting citizens and contributing to overall public safety.
