KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has responded to the demands of union council representatives by announcing an increase in funds allocated to union councils (UCs).
Speaking at an interactive session for budget 2024-25 with PPP representatives and party workers, Shah emphasized the importance of empowering UCs to better serve their communities.
In addition to enhancing UCs’ funds, the Chief Minister pledged to ensure accountability for their expenditure, emphasizing the importance of judicious spending.
He also highlighted his government’s commitment to addressing key issues faced by the people of Karachi, particularly in underdeveloped areas.
This includes improving water supply, sanitation, and transport facilities, with a focus on providing essential services to those in need.
Acknowledging concerns raised about environmental degradation caused by untreated wastewater and industrial waste, Shah announced plans to initiate a sewerage treatment plant scheme worth Rs135 billion in a PPP mode.
This initiative aims to treat wastewater for industrial usage, thereby mitigating environmental damage and promoting sustainable development.
Furthermore, Shah addressed concerns about the rampant drug problem in certain areas of Karachi, directing authorities to take strict action against drug mafias. He assured residents of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes through targeted operations.
Party workers and representatives also raised various local issues, including water shortages, lack of healthcare facilities, and inadequate educational resources.
In response, the Chief Minister promised to address these concerns and provide necessary facilities to underserved areas, such as islands and newly established districts like Keamari.
Efforts to improve infrastructure, such as constructing roads and developing parks and playgrounds, were also discussed. Shah committed to finalizing schemes for road construction and instructed local bodies to prioritize the development of recreational spaces.
Overall, the interactive session highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of communities across Sindh, with a focus on enhancing local governance, improving infrastructure, and promoting social welfare.
