In the bustling city of Karachi, tensions flared as the police detained more than 10 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists who had gathered for a rally at Teen Talwar, according to official police reports on Sunday.
The situation unfolded with reports indicating that PTI supporters, including women and children, converged at Teen Talwar, leading to the blockage of nearby roads. Allegations from the PTI claimed that the police resorted to the use of tear gas against the participants in the election rally.
Simultaneously, the Karachi police shared a concerning development, revealing that SHO Boat Basin Riaz Niazi had been physically assaulted by members affiliated with a political party.
The aftermath of the assault saw Niazi being promptly transported to the hospital for necessary medical treatment, as per official police communication on social media platform X.
The rally, a crucial element of the PTI’s preparations for the upcoming 2024 election, was part of a broader directive from the party leaders. Earlier on the same day, the PTI issued a call to action, urging its supporters and ticket holders to organize public gatherings in each constituency, marking the initiation of their electoral campaign.
Barrister Gohar, in a post on X after midnight on Sunday, conveyed that the instructions to orchestrate these nationwide power shows had been expressly conveyed by the founding Chairman, Imran Khan.
Expressing dismay at the unfolding events, the PTI voiced its concerns on X, stating, “Police are arresting peaceful people in Karachi during PTI’s rally. These visuals depict the state of free and fair elections.”
A separate video circulated depicting a significant number of police personnel wielding batons, juxtaposed with a scene of a party banner and numerous flags scattered on the ground.
The PTI raised pointed questions, asking, “The police raided the PTI rally with audacity, vandalizing trucks and loudspeakers. Under whose orders are people being subjected to violence for conducting a peaceful rally?” The incident raises broader questions about the dynamics of political rallies and law enforcement in the lead-up to the imminent elections.
