Section 144 Imposed in Punjab Amidst Election Threats to Maintain Law and Order

Section 144

The Punjab government has taken precautionary measures by imposing Section 144 across the province until February 12 due to reported threats to the law and order situation during the upcoming general elections.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure empowers the district administration to issue orders in the public interest, including placing bans on activities for specific periods. According to a notification from Punjab Home Department Secretary Shakeel Ahmed, the decision was prompted by perceived threats to law and order and public peace during the February 8 polls.

The notification expressed concerns about potential security risks associated with political gatherings, rallies, and corner meetings by candidates and political parties across Punjab. It cited the possibility of these events becoming soft targets for desperate acts by terrorists and miscreants, emphasizing the need for extraordinary vigilance and extensive security measures.

Under the directive, there is a ban on displaying weapons, including licensed ones, except those by law enforcement agencies. Additionally, all types of firing and violations of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s code of conduct are prohibited.

This move follows the formation of a seven-member committee by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to oversee the security arrangements and smooth conduct of the upcoming elections. Despite recent security concerns, interim Information Minister Murtaza Solangi asserted that the threat alerts were unrelated to the polls, reaffirming the commitment to holding general elections on February 8.

With a few weeks remaining until the elections, Pakistan has witnessed an increase in terrorism. The government and security officials have assured the Election Commission of their readiness to address security challenges and conduct the polls successfully, reviewing preparations to ensure a secure and smooth electoral process.
