The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has decided to conclude their more than 30-day-long sit-in outside the National Press Club (NPC) in Islamabad. The protesters, who began their demonstration on December 20, 2023, were highlighting issues related to “enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings” in Balochistan.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch, an activist and one of the organizers of the protest, announced that they are ending the sit-in and returning to Balochistan. Additionally, she mentioned plans for a rally in Balochistan scheduled for January 27.
The decision to conclude the sit-in comes after NPC Islamabad lodged a complaint with Kohsar Police Station on Monday, requesting the removal of the Baloch protesters from the open park in front of the NPC. The complaint cited security concerns, as the presence of the protesters was viewed as a potential threat, given the frequent visits of national political and social figures to the NPC.
Last month, Islamabad police conducted a crackdown on the Baloch protesters, leading to the dismantling of their camps outside the National Press Club. The move resulted in widespread public outcry, and many protesters were initially detained.
The government defended the crackdown, citing it as a necessary measure to prevent a potential “catastrophe.” However, in response to public pressure, all Baloch protesters were released after a week in detention.
Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued orders, in response to a petition filed by Baloch activist Sammi Deen Baloch, instructing local authorities and police not to hinder or use force to disperse the Baloch marchers in Islamabad.
