Former finance minister Sartaj Aziz has passed away at the age of 94, as confirmed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal on Tuesday.
In a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), Iqbal expressed his condolences, highlighting Aziz’s significance as a veteran of the Pakistan movement and a valuable asset to the nation.
Iqbal, who had worked closely with Aziz, praised his contributions, stating that his services would be remembered, and conveyed prayers for the departed soul and strength for the grieving family.
Born in February 1929 in Nowshera, Aziz was a prominent politician affiliated with the Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N. Throughout his extensive political career, he held key governmental positions, notably serving as the minister for finance and economic affairs.
Aziz’s political journey included a stint as a senator from 1985 to 1999, and he was elected as an advisor on national security and foreign affairs in the 2013 general elections. The news of his passing prompted President Arif Alvi to express deep sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved family, seeking forgiveness for Aziz and patience for his loved ones.
Aziz’s influential political career extended beyond domestic affairs, encompassing academia, civil service, and public office. His roles in the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Commission allowed him to shape economic policies for the country. Additionally, Aziz held positions such as assistant president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and director of the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Commodities and Trade Division.

As a two-time finance minister, Aziz earned respect in national discourse, providing insightful analyses on economic and political issues. He further shared his wealth of knowledge through numerous authored books and articles over the years.
