Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu held a high-level meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a visit to Tehran on Monday. This visit followed the recent assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’ political bureau, by Israel, which has significantly escalated tensions in the region.
Shoigu’s trip also included discussions with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian, where they addressed regional issues. Additionally, Shoigu met with Major General Mohammad Baqeri, chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, to discuss deepening the comprehensive cooperation agreement between Russia and Iran.
Shoigu emphasized Russia’s readiness to collaborate with Iran on regional challenges and mutual interests.
Shoigu condemned Haniyeh’s assassination, describing it as a cowardly act aimed at increasing regional tensions. Major General Baqeri, in their meeting, highlighted the shifting global power dynamics, stating, “The United States is well aware that the era of unipolar power is over.” He also expressed Iran’s willingness to enhance trilateral cooperation with Russia and China.
The Russian Security Council noted that Shoigu’s discussions in Tehran would focus on strengthening the strategic partnership between Russia and Iran, addressing shared security concerns, and exploring joint economic initiatives. The meetings aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation in security, trade, and economic projects, as well as various aspects of global and regional security.
Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 31 while attending the swearing-in ceremony of President Pezeshkian.
The incident has sparked outrage in Iran, with officials condemning it as a “blatant violation” of international law and affirming Tehran’s right to retaliate against the perpetrators.
