Report Highlights Concerns Over Decline in Children’s Learning Levels in Sindh

Children’s Learning Levels

KARACHI: The latest Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) for Sindh paints a worrying picture of the educational scenario, particularly highlighting a persistent decline in children’s learning levels despite a significant increase in enrollment rates in 2023.

At the report’s launch event, Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah, alongside other participants, expressed deep concern over the ongoing dip in learning outcomes, attributing it to the enduring impact of Covid-19 and the 2022 floods.

ASER focuses on assessing foundational literacy and numeracy among students aged five to 16 in Sindh.

While it acknowledges the remarkable rise in enrollment rates, especially in early childhood education (ECE) and for 6-16-year-olds, it also underscores the urgent need to address the widening learning gap.

The report reveals that despite improvements in enrollment, the quality of education remains a pressing issue, with a significant portion of students lacking basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.

Notably, the proportion of children proficient in foundational learning has seen a decline over the years, indicating a systemic challenge that demands immediate attention.

Moreover, ASER highlights disparities in access to education, with gender gaps persisting and certain regions facing greater educational challenges.

Rural areas, in particular, show concerning trends, with declining proficiency levels in crucial subjects like Sindhi/Urdu and English.

ASER also sheds light on infrastructure deficiencies in schools, exacerbated by natural disasters like floods, which have led to a decline in basic facilities.

Despite these challenges, there is a growing emphasis on leveraging technology for learning solutions, as well as addressing the impact of climate change on education.

The report underscores the need for concerted efforts from policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to ensure inclusive and quality education for all children in Sindh.

By prioritizing foundational learning and addressing infrastructure shortcomings, Sindh can chart a path towards equitable educational opportunities and sustainable development.
