The Punjab Home Department has called for public support to secure the release of financially struggling prisoners who have completed their sentences but remain incarcerated due to unpaid fines or compensation.
Philanthropists and well-wishers are encouraged to donate their Zakat to help clear these prisoners’ dues, allowing them to reunite with their families before Eid. The initiative aims to provide relief to those unable to pay legal penalties despite serving their designated prison terms.
According to a spokesperson from the department, approximately 150 prisoners are still behind bars due to outstanding dues totaling Rs100 million. These individuals have completed their sentences but remain in custody as they lack the financial means to settle their fines or blood money obligations.
In a similar effort last year, Rs170 million was contributed, leading to the release of 226 prisoners. The department hopes for similar generosity this year to facilitate the release of those still awaiting financial assistance.
Individuals willing to contribute can deposit funds into the Punjab Prison Foundation’s account. Donations will be used to settle prisoners’ fines, ensuring their timely release. Additionally, payments can be made directly to a bank on behalf of a specific prisoner, with the necessary challan form submitted to the relevant jail authorities for processing.
The initiative highlights the role of social responsibility in supporting underprivileged individuals and upholding the values of compassion and justice, particularly during the holy month of Ramazan. By facilitating the release of such prisoners, donors not only grant them freedom but also enable them to celebrate Eid with their families.
The Punjab Home Department urges citizens, businesses, and charitable organizations to step forward and participate in this humanitarian effort, emphasizing that even small contributions can collectively make a significant impact.
