LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced a significant initiative to provide free solar systems to 50,000 households in the province. This program, designed to reduce electricity costs for low-consumption households, is fully funded by the provincial government at an estimated cost of 10 billion rupees.
Households consuming up to 100 units of electricity per month will be eligible for the free solar systems. The government will cover all expenses, including the cost of the solar systems and their installation. To maintain transparency and fairness, households involved in electricity theft, meter tampering, or any other fraudulent activities will be disqualified from participating in the program.
Eligible households can register for the initiative, known as the “Roshan Gharana Program,” by sending their bill reference number and identity card number via SMS to 8800. The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) will verify the data of eligible customers and provide it to the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) for further validation. Once the validation process is complete, the final list of eligible households will be forwarded to the district administration for implementation.
In addition to these measures, the Department of Energy has received approval to establish a dedicated project management unit to oversee the successful execution of the initiative. This unit will ensure that the project is carried out efficiently and effectively, providing much-needed relief to low-income households across Punjab.
This initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in Punjab, helping to reduce electricity costs for thousands of households while promoting the use of renewable energy sources. By providing free solar systems, the Punjab government aims to support low-income families and contribute to the broader goal of energy sustainability in the region.
