LAHORE: A resolution urging the formation of a judicial commission to thoroughly investigate the events of May 9, which witnessed attacks on military installations following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan, was presented in the Punjab Assembly.
Opposition Leader Malik Ahmed Khan, representing the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), submitted the resolution ahead of May 9, emphasizing the critical need for an impartial inquiry into the incidents. The resolution underscores concerns about the lack of clarity surrounding the events, despite the passage of a year, and expresses apprehension about the potential exploitation of these occurrences for political purposes.
The day before, DG ISPR Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif reiterated that any dialogue with PTI could only commence if the party publicly apologized for its actions. He emphasized that engaging in dialogue with a group that attacks its army and engages in propaganda against it is untenable.
Furthermore, Maj-Gen Sharif emphasized that dialogue is primarily reserved for political parties, rather than institutions, and stressed the necessity for sincere apologies and constructive engagement from PTI to pave the way forward.
Addressing inquiries, he clarified that PTI secured only 31 percent of votes in the February 8 elections, thereby dismissing any notion that voters who supported the party in general elections endorsed the violent actions of May 9. This assertion aimed to dispel any misconceptions regarding public support for such acts and reaffirm the stance against violence and instability.
Additionally, the resolution serves as a testament to the Assembly’s commitment to upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and justice within the political landscape of Punjab. By advocating for a thorough investigation into the events of May 9, the Assembly seeks to address lingering questions and ensure that any wrongdoing is appropriately addressed, thus reaffirming its dedication to democratic norms and the rule of law.
