Leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have strongly criticized Bushra Bibi, wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, for her statement alleging Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the 2022 ouster of the PTI-led government. In a rare video message released on Thursday, Bushra Bibi accused Saudi Arabia of playing a key role in toppling Imran Khan’s administration.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed disappointment, calling the remarks “regrettable” and reflective of desperation. He stressed the importance of safeguarding foreign policy and maintaining Pakistan’s brotherly ties with Saudi Arabia, a country that has consistently supported Pakistan during crises.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for allegedly exploiting religion to further political aims. “They have now resorted to using the Shariah card,” he remarked, condemning the politicization of religious sentiments.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari described Bushra Bibi’s comments as a “suicidal attack” on a key ally of the Muslim world, warning of their harmful implications for Pakistan’s relations with Saudi Arabia.
Information Minister Atta Tarar labeled Bushra Bibi’s allegations “absurd,” pointing out that her accusations targeted the same country where her daughter married. Tarar further accused her of selling state gifts received from Saudi Arabia on the black market.
The Pakistan Ulema Council chairman, Allama Tahir Ashrafi, dismissed the claims as baseless, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s respect and hospitality during Imran Khan’s visits. He questioned the rationale behind the allegations, emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s significant investment in Pakistan and dismissing the claims as propaganda aimed at appeasing forces hostile to the Gulf state.
