PMD Forecasts Relief from Heatwave with Anticipated Rainfall in Lahore and Punjab

Lahore and parts of Punjab are expecting relief from hot temperatures as the Pakistan Meteorological Department predicts rain, wind, and thunderstorms in the upcoming days.

The much-needed respite comes as a westerly wave is expected to traverse upper and central regions of the country. Presently, a continental air mass dominates most areas of Pakistan. However, the impending westerly wave is poised to bring about a change, with partly cloudy conditions and the likelihood of rain, wind, and thunderstorms anticipated in Murree, Galiyat, and their surroundings on Thursday night.

As the weekend approaches, the Meteorological agency predicts widespread rain, wind, and thunderstorms in several districts, including Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Bhakkar, Mianwali, and others. Notably, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, and Narowal are also expected to experience the wet spell, with isolated hailstorms possible.

The anticipated precipitation comes as a welcome relief for residents grappling with temperatures soaring well above the seasonal norm. Lahore, in particular, has been experiencing maximum temperatures reaching 40°C, while Dera Ghazi Khan recorded a scorching 46°C.

High relative humidity levels have compounded the discomfort, with evening hours offering little relief, evidenced by readings as low as 14% in Dera Ghazi Khan and 31% in Lahore.

As the rain and cooler weather approaches, authorities are optimistic for a break from the recent heatwave. With the expected wet spell, Lahore’s maximum temperatures are anticipated to be between 39 and 41°C, providing some much-needed relief.

This shift in weather patterns is not only beneficial for residents’ comfort but also holds significance for agriculture and water resources. The rainfall is expected to replenish parched lands and reservoirs, alleviating concerns over water scarcity and crop yield.

Moreover, the occurrence of thunderstorms may help dissipate pollutants and improve air quality, offering a breath of fresh air for urban dwellers.

While the rainy season brings its own set of challenges, including the risk of flooding and infrastructure damage, the overall impact is anticipated to be positive, offering relief from the prolonged heatwave and rejuvenating the region’s ecosystems.
