PM Shehbaz receives summary for National Assembly Dissolution

The prime minister will forward the summary to the president, later today.

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has delivered a summary to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, proposing the dissolution of the National Assembly of Pakistan. In the upcoming stage, PM Shehbaz will send summary to President Arif Alvi later today to dissolve the National Assembly.

PM

The assembly will stand dissolved 48 hours after the recommendation of the prime minister, even if the president doesn’t sign it, as per the constitution. However, sources indicate that the president will likely sign the document tomorrow, which is Thursday.

Before its term ends, the federal cabinet convenes its final meeting. Shehbaz Sharif will remain in charge until they select a caretaker prime minister.

The government is eager to dissolve the assembly before its five-year term concludes on August 12. This early dissolution will permit the Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct general elections within 90 days, instead of the usual 60 days after the assembly’s term completion.

The prime minister, along with the leader of the opposition, Raja Riaz, will initiate a consultation process for selecting a caretaker prime minister. This individual will lead the country until a new government assumes office following the election.

The two are scheduled to meet on Wednesday. However, the identity of the caretaker prime minister remains uncertain, as the ruling parties are keeping their intentions undisclosed.

Several names have emerged in media reports as potential candidates, including Ishaq Dar and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi from PMLN, technocrat Hafiz Shiekh, former Balochistan chief minister Jam Kamal, and former jurist Justice (retd) Khalilur Rehman Ramday.
