Parliament’s National Security Committee to Hold Closed-Door Session on Rising Terrorism

The Parliamentary National Security Committee is set to convene a closed-door session on Wednesday or Thursday, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with senior military leadership and intelligence agency heads, will attend the meeting.

Sources reveal that the entire House will be transformed into the Security Committee for the session, during which members will receive a detailed briefing on the increasing terrorist activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. All federal ministers and leaders of parliamentary parties have also been invited.

The session will review the progress of the National Action Plan and is expected to discuss intensifying operations against militants. A proposal for National Action Plan II, introduced by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, will also be a key point of discussion.

Members will be briefed on the current security situation, address their concerns, and formulate strategies for future actions.

The meeting comes in response to the recent spike in terrorist activities in northwestern and southwestern Pakistan, which have included high-profile attacks on security forces and public infrastructure.

The National Action Plan, first launched in 2014, aims to combat terrorism through a comprehensive approach, including regulating madrassas, blocking terrorist financing, and enhancing law enforcement capabilities. However, the resurgence of militant activities has raised concerns, prompting calls for a more robust and updated framework.

Sources suggest that the committee may also discuss improving coordination between federal and provincial agencies to enhance the fight against terrorism. National Action Plan II is expected to address the gaps in the original plan and adapt to new security challenges.

It remains to be seen whether new policy measures will be announced following the session, but insiders indicate a growing consensus on adopting a more aggressive approach to combat militant groups operating within Pakistan.
