The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Pakistan has expressed serious concern over the United States’ recent decision to impose new tariffs on a number of countries. The ministry warned that such actions could disrupt global trade dynamics and negatively impact international economic cooperation.
During a routine media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that Pakistan is monitoring the situation closely and urges a resolution that supports mutual interests. He highlighted that global trade functions as an interconnected system, and unilateral measures like tariffs risk disturbing the balance.
Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a fair and transparent trading environment that benefits all stakeholders. He noted that Pakistan advocates for inclusive economic policies and rejects decisions that may undermine the economic stability of developing nations.
The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, recently announced extensive reciprocal tariffs targeting several countries, including Pakistan, citing long-standing trade inequities.
In response, Pakistan urged the United States to seek a resolution that upholds the integrity and stability of global trade systems, and to avoid actions that could lead to economic disparities or tensions.
Global UGRAD Program Termination:
Addressing the conclusion of the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD) for Pakistani students, Khan remarked that the decision ends a valuable 15-year partnership. The program had played a key role in strengthening educational and cultural ties and deepening bilateral cooperation in areas such as education, science, technology, and public diplomacy.
June 2025 Palestine Conference:
Khan also emphasized Pakistan’s firm support for the upcoming high-level international conference on the Palestine issue, scheduled for June 2025. The event is aimed at advancing a peaceful resolution and facilitating the implementation of a two-state solution.
He expressed appreciation to France and Saudi Arabia for co-chairing the preparatory sessions and voiced hope that the conference would deliver tangible steps toward peace and justice in the region.
In his remarks, Khan stressed that ahead of the conference, it is crucial to enforce a complete ceasefire, lift the blockade on Gaza, ensure humanitarian access, and protect civilians and aid workers.
He condemned any efforts to forcibly displace Palestinians or annex their land, calling for unconditional rejection and firm international action to prevent such violations.
Furthermore, he strongly criticized ongoing Israeli military aggression, mourning the recent deaths of 15 Palestinian emergency and civil defense personnel who were killed by direct gunfire.
