Bilateral Ties

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has emphasized the imperative to strengthen its ties with the United States in 2024, building upon the positive momentum established in the past year. This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani and US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome.

The discussions between Jilani and Blome encompassed key aspects of bilateral ties, with a specific focus on the recent visit of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the United States. The Caretaker Foreign Minister underscored the importance of both countries continuing to build on recent exchanges and the positive momentum in their ties throughout 2024.

During the meeting, Blome and Jilani delved into various significant bilateral issues, including the expansion of diplomatic engagement and the secure and efficient processing of Afghan citizens eligible for resettlement in the US. The US Mission Acting Spokesperson, Thomas Montgomery, highlighted the comprehensive nature of the discussions, addressing issues of mutual interest.

In his recent two-day visit to the US last month, COAS Gen Munir engaged with key political and military figures, exploring potential areas of bilateral and regional cooperation. His meetings included discussions with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon, where regional security developments and potential avenues for bilateral defence cooperation were explored.

The US Department of State spokesperson, commenting on COAS Munir’s visit, emphasized Pakistan’s significance as an important partner, expressing engagement with various stakeholders within the Pakistani government. The ongoing diplomatic interactions between Pakistan and the United States underscore a commitment to strengthening ties and exploring collaborative opportunities in various domains.
