PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif addressed the party’s central working committee in Lahore on Saturday, recalling a significant meeting with incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan just before the 2014 sit-in. Prior to Nawaz’s speech, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif addressed the committee, asserting that no one was better suited to lead the country than his elder brother.
Shehbaz urged Nawaz to commend the steadfast loyalty of PML-N leaders who had remained faithful through challenging times. Reflecting on his tenure as Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz expressed confusion and frustration over why his government was overthrown, particularly as it was his first time being elected to the office.
Nawaz Sharif reiterated a long-standing claim that he had been offered $5 billion to abandon Pakistan’s nuclear program, an offer he firmly rejected. He also accused former prime minister Imran Khan, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, and former spy chief General Zaheerul Islam of conspiring in London when the PML-N came to power in 2018. According to Nawaz, despite assurances given during a post-election meeting, Imran Khan had refused his offer to collaborate with the government.
The speeches highlighted internal party solidarity and external political challenges, reflecting on both past grievances and ongoing political dynamics. Nawaz’s allegations pointed to a broader narrative of betrayal and conspiracy that he believes undermined his leadership and the PML-N’s governance.
