National Assembly refers SC Judge Mazahar Ali Naqvi’s assets beyond means case to public account committee

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly today referred the case of assets beyond means involving a judge of the Supreme Court Mazahar Ali Naqvi to the Public Accounts Committee on Thursday.

The National Assembly directed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to initiate inquiry against SC Judge Mazar Ali Akbar Naqvi and submit report within 15 days.

MNA Ayaz Sadiq said PAC should report its findings to the National Assembly within 15 days after conducting investigation.

Ayaz Sadiq also said that the PAC will coordinate with other institutions including Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to conduct a special audit of the assets of the Judge along with the joint team investigation by Auditor General of Pakistan.

PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq said there Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi is facing serious allegations of corruption which raise doubts on his asset.

He said that the judge must give information to the PAC about his sources of income, his tax returns, and purchase of a plot worth Rs110 million.

Chief Justice to be summoned in the National Assembly

Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi urged the Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf to summon in the House the chief justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial for seeking NA’s record of debate on judicial reforms bill 2023.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Abbasi asked NA Speaker to convert the NA into a committee and summon the CJP to seek explanation from him for seeking record of the Parliament about debate on judicial reforms.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was speaking on a point of order.

The members of the National Assembly asked the Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf not to provide the record to the court.

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial seeks NA record

 Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Chief Justice of Pakistan directed Attorney General for Pakistan to provide copies of Parliament proceedings regarding the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023.

The bill curtails the powers of the chief justice of Pakistan. CJP said that he wanted to see the concerns of the lawmakers.

Chief Justice issued this directive on Tuesday during the hearing of the petitions challenging the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023.

The Bill became the law in April this year after the approval by the Parliament.
