Former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asserted that some protesters advocating for a Gaza ceasefire may have connections to Russian President Putin. Pelosi made these remarks during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, where she expressed concerns about protesters disrupting events related to President Joe Biden’s support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas.
Pelosi mentioned experiencing disruptions at a Democratic meeting in Seattle and suggested a link between those calling for a ceasefire and Putin’s messaging. She emphasized the need to address the suffering in Gaza but claimed that calls for a ceasefire aligned with Putin’s agenda.
Pelosi acknowledged that some protesters may be genuine, while others she believed could be connected to Russia. She called for an investigation into the financing of these protests and urged the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to look into the matter.
Pelosi’s statements come amid ongoing protests against Biden’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, with some disruptions occurring during the president’s campaign speech in South Carolina. The issue has also garnered attention from young voters, with a significant disapproval rate of Biden’s handling of the situation.
Despite calls for an immediate Gaza ceasefire from various actors globally, the International Court of Justice recently failed to order one. The court stated that certain allegations against Israel fell within the provisions of the Genocide Convention but did not issue a ceasefire directive.
