LHC to Hear Contempt Petition Against PM Shehbaz for Alleged ‘Derogatory’ Remarks Against Judges Today

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has scheduled a contempt petition for a hearing today (Friday) against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accusing him of using inappropriate language towards judges.

The contempt petition will be heard by LHC Justice Muhammad Waheed Khan in Court 37, also known as the Justice A.R Cornelius Block Court. The federation has been included as a party to the case through the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

The petitioner, Ashba Kamran, has filed a contempt of court petition against the Prime Minister, citing his alleged use of disrespectful language towards judges. She urges the provincial apex court to take action against Shehbaz Sharif for his remarks.

The petition expresses concern and disappointment over Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent statement during the general council meeting of PMLN on May 28. In his address, Shehbaz Sharif reportedly referred to the judiciary as “black sheep,” a statement deemed lacking in decorum and undermining the integrity and independence of the judiciary. As a citizen of Pakistan, the petitioner asserts her right to file this petition regarding the Prime Minister’s contemptuous remarks towards the judiciary.

The petitioner finds it deeply troubling that a high-ranking official would openly disparage the judiciary, an institution crucial for safeguarding citizens’ rights and ensuring government accountability.

The petition was filed under Article 199 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The petitioner argues that the derogatory remarks made by Prime Minister Shehbaz constitute contempt of court and pose a significant threat to the credibility and authority of the judiciary. She insists that appropriate action must be taken to address this matter and uphold the dignity of the judiciary.

Furthermore, the petitioner asserts that Prime Minister Shehbaz’s actions have aggrieved her and calls for redressal of the situation.
