Law Minister Tarar
ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar predicted about 14 years jail term for Imran Khan in the Cipher case. Law Minister said that Azam Khan’s confessional statement against Imran Khan could lead to a 14 years jail sentence for using classified documents for vested interests.
On Wednesday, Azam Khan, the former principal secretary recorded his statement under CrPC 164 before a magistrate. He claimed that the former PM utilized a diplomatic Cipher to fabricate a false narrative against the establishment and opposition.
According to Azam Khan’s statement, when he shared the cipher with Imran Khan, the former PM showed enthusiasm and referred to the language as a “US blunder.”
Federal Law Minister explained that exhibiting “criminal negligence” in handling confidential documents could result in a two-year imprisonment for an official.
However, he emphasized that if the cipher was made public and its contents are leaked for personal gain, the accused can face 14 years in prison.
Imran Khan, who was ousted via a parliamentary vote in April of the previous year, had alleged on March 27, 2022, that Washington orchestrated a plan to remove him from office. Khan presented the cipher at a public rally to support his claims and get public support.
The US consistently denied these allegations, categorically terming them as false.
During the press conference, the law minister claimed that the former PM had taken the cipher with him and never returned it.
He mentioned that the government had referred the cipher scam to the FIA, however, the PTI chief had obtained a court’s stay order to halt the investigation.
Tarar stated that the FIA has now summoned the PTI leaders, including Imran Khan, to join the investigation on July 25 in this case.
The federal agency will decide whether to convert the ongoing probe into a criminal investigation.
