ISLAMABAD: A section of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) was blocked between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper’s deputy director for Shangla and Kohistan said that the KKH was cleared of land Kohistan and Chilas in Gilgit Baltistan’s Diamer district, leading to the stranding of several passengers, according to officials.
The blockage was caused by a massive mudslide at Dasu’s Kaigah area, resulting in the suspension of traffic on the KKH. As a result, hundreds of passengers were stranded on both sides of the highway, facing difficulties.
The National Highway Authority slides on Sunday but got blocked again on Monday. Authorities were working to clear the rubble and debris. It was expected that all blockades would be removed by 9-10 p.m., allowing the road to reopen for traffic.
However, Stranded passengers, including tourists, families, elders, and women, were waiting for the road clearance operation to be completed. Due to the massive landslide, the clearance was taking longer. And there was also a shortage of drinking water as there were no nearby shops.
Additionally, heavy flooding in Panibah resulted in a minor girl being injured. Damage to houses in Upper Kohistan’s Shetial area. The increased flow of water in the Indus River caused flooding in nearby vacant houses.
The KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warned that monsoon rains were likely to continue throughout the week. With a new spell expected to enter the province on Tuesday.
District administration directs to take precautionary measures as thundershowers, strong winds, urban flooding, flash flooding, and landslides may occur in upper districts.
