Karachi Police Rescue Individual Detained by CTD Officers

Karachi Police

Law enforcement agencies in Karachi successfully recovered an individual who was being held hostage by officials from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

The recovery operation highlighted significant misconduct within the CTD ranks and led to immediate actions against the involved officers.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) CTD Asif Ejaz Sheikh, the recovered individual had recently returned to Pakistan from Iraq.

Following his return, the CTD team took him into custody but failed to notify their higher authorities about this detention, which deviated from standard operational protocols.

DIG Sheikh disclosed that the incident led to the arrest of a CTD sub-inspector and an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), while the Station House Officer (SHO) connected to the case has been suspended.

Furthermore, a constable and an informant involved in the illegal detention are currently at large and being sought by the authorities.

The situation escalated when it was revealed that the CTD team demanded a ransom of Rs 500,000 from the detained individual’s family. After negotiations, the ransom amount was reduced to Rs 100,000.

To ensure the safe recovery of the hostage, plain-clothed Rangers personnel were deployed to make the payment. Following the transaction, uniformed CTD officers carried out the raid to recover the individual.

This incident has cast a spotlight on the internal corruption within the CTD, prompting immediate action and a call for further investigation to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The DIG emphasized the need for stringent oversight and adherence to protocol to maintain the integrity of law enforcement agencies.

This recovery operation not only underscores the dedication of the Karachi police to upholding justice but also reveals the challenges posed by rogue elements within their ranks.

The Karachi police’s swift action in recovering the hostage and arresting the involved officers serves as a reminder of their commitment to law and order, despite the complexities and internal challenges they face.

The ongoing pursuit of the absconding constable and informant is indicative of the broader efforts to address and rectify corruption within the department.
